The Shomer Achi Project - My Brother’s Keeper
If I am only for myself, what am I?” (Hillel)
At Tebeka we believe everyone is part of the solution and that we are all responsible for one another. With this in mind, Tebeka launched the Shomer Achi (“My Brother’s Keeper”) Project, which offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the promotion of social justice and equality in Israel.
The program invites law firms and other supporters to sponsor a Tebeka attorney in order to provide free legal aid for Ethiopian Israelis in need of assistance. Tebeka attorneys work on cases involving civil rights, family law, labor law, health law, housing law, and other areas. Sponsors make a two-year commitment to provide a modest monthly stipend that helps cover the cost of the Tebeka attorney’s salary, court fees, Bar Association membership fees, et al. This direct sponsorship also helps foster a unique relationship between Tebeka’s attorneys and their sponsors, who often provide pro bono assistance on major cases.
To monitor the Shomer Achi Project, Tebeka established an advisory committee comprised of representatives from participating law firms and members of Tebeka’s Board of Directors.
Bosana Yardeni, Tebeka Attorney hired through the Shomer Achi program
“I arrived in Israel at the age of eight, full of hopes and dreams but not knowing what to expect of the land of milk and honey that I heard so much about as a child. Adapting to a new way life and a vastly different culture in Israel was at times very challenging. One day while in the ninth grade, I was watching a report on the news about the first Ethiopian Israeli to graduate law school (Itzik!). His story of giving back to the Ethiopian community through Tebeka helped inspire me to become a lawyer and dedicate myself to public interest work. I finished high school, completed my army service, and went on to graduate law school with honors. After passing the Bar exam, I began searching for a meaningful way to put my degree to good use. I applied to Tebeka hoping to land my dream job and thanks to the Shomer Achi Project I was invited to join the group’s legal department. I am absolutely thrilled to be part of this wonderful organization and to be making a real and lasting contribution to my community and country!”
