Tebeka is mentioned on the website, “The Hottest Place in Hell”, in the article as one who submitted the petition to the High Court.
The head of the unit for coordinating the fight against racism in the Ministry of Justice was sued by the rabbi of Kiryat Gat, for asking to investigate the claims against him regarding discrimination against Ethiopians. At the same time, a petition was submitted to the High Court last week on behalf of “Lee-Bar” Catering and the Tebeka – Justice and Equality for Ethiopians Association. In the petition, the Minister of Religious Services and the Chief Rabbinate Council are required to remove Rabbi Havlin from his position as Chief Rabbi of Kiryat Gat.
The petitioners demand that the Attorney General, the State Attorney and the Israel Police open a criminal investigation against Havlin and request the replacement of the catering’s kosher inspector. “The caterer filed a complaint against the Rabbi in the past and the police found nothing criminal in his conduct”, states Attorney Cohen.
Rabbi Havlin was not satisfied with filing a lawsuit against Zana, and also filed a lawsuit against Uriah Elkayim, wrote “Kan 11”; Against Geula Even, the presenter of the news program in which the article was broadcast, and against the broadcasting corporation.
In this case, the plaintiff was asked to amend the statement of claim in such a way that he would refer to specific statements that appear in the letters that Zana sent to the rabbis and constitute defamation according to him.
The lawsuit was filed by Rabbi Havlin through attorney Daniel Cohen following an investigation published in September 2018 in “Kan 11”.
In the investigation, it is claimed that the Rabbi demanded that female workers from Ethiopia at the “Lee-Bar” Catering company provide proof of their Jewishness in order for the business to receive strict kosher certification.
After the broadcast, letters were quoted that Zena had sent to the Chief Rabbi, in which was asked to examine the Rabbi’s behavior.
“Zena acted maliciously without doing an inspection, exceeding his authority”, claimed the prosecution at the hearing. “Conspired with the reporter. Distribute the letter to the media. He didn’t write only to the Rabbis. He didn’t check and didn’t talk to the Rabbi”.
“It’s an administrative decision of the state whether to grant immunity or not”, said the defendant’s lawyers to the judge. “We considered and decided for reasons that I won’t go into detail… We want the claim to be dismissed completely”.
